Game info: Psygnosis has recreated the world of racing with Formula 1 for the PlayStation. Choose from 35 different drivers and race on 17 tracks in the real world. When on the track, every driver has a custom AI: veterans manage tracks better than rookies.
In short, all the drivers like their real life counterparts. The two modes of play, Arcade and Grand Prix, offer unique experiences and distinct. The Arcade mode keeps the emphasis on driving fast and the negotiation rounds. Grand Prix offers the most realistic racing action and has options to optimize the machine (including downforce, transmission settings and brake balance) for a specific track or riding style.
If you like to drive as fast as possible on an empty track or do you like trying to jockey for position in a tight crowded, FORMULA 1 has the options you can play the way you want. When you make a game that requires a certain level of realism, developers must find a way to skilfully combine the gameplay and graphics with large quality sim.
This is harder than it looks. Often these attempts will excel in simulation, but will fall drastically short of game. Or vice versa.
This is especially true for sports games, where a high level of realism equals pleasure of sports fans. Formula 1 has managed to blend realism complete and exciting gameplay in one package amazing. Although no strangers to the fast pace drivers, Formula 1 is the first attempt Psygnosis' in a true racing game. All their other (WipeOut, Destruction Derby) have put a twist on the genre, which involves some kind of battle. This time, Psygnosis has chosen to focus its attention on the race itself, creating a driving experience that is almost real like getting behind the wheel of a real Formula 1 car. Sim aspects of Formula 1 are very impressive. There are 18 real tracks from around the world, and a variety of teams and drivers to choose from.
Weather can be affected, as well as the duration of the race. Your car can also be changed depending on how realistic you want to get. Assisted steering and brakes are optional. The car is much like a powerful race car should, extremely fast and extremely touchy. Each car handles differently, Renault is easier to drive than the Ferrari powerful, even if Ferrari has its advantages on the straights. Turning can also be something of a bitch. Since the turning radius on the Formula 1 is so short, and all the power in the back, it's easy to spin out of control going around the curves at high speed.
But mastering control is ultimately very rewarding. Once you have tamed the exhaust coming out of beasts you'll be flying around corners, no problem. One flaw of Formula 1 is its graphics. Although they are not terrible by any stretch of imagination, who can not resist Ridge Racer or Andretti Racing.
However, the graphics get the job done, and pop-up is minimized. These are minor quibbles though.
Formula 1 is a solid, exciting racing sim that offers almost all categories.
